Imagine a conversation
that you would have with a friend. Then, translate that
conversation into English.
Practice! Practice
is the best way to improve your English. Why not try
an English chat room or an English message board on
the internet?
English challenge!
Make a challenge for yourself. For example, try to learn
a new word for every letter of the alphabet in one week.
Setting challenges will stimulate and motivate you.
Combine your interests
to learn more English. If you love baseball, try watching
a game using the bilinagual English button on your tv.
If you enjoy hiking, find some people to join you to
make an English hiking club.
Choose an English
word for your day. It can be a word to motivate or help
you. It can be a word to inspire you, for example, "succeed".
Use a dictionary to find new words.
Make a study schedule.
You will probably study more if there is a special time
you reserve for studying. It should be the same time
every day.
Set clear goals
for yourself. Write you goals on a list and cross them
off when you achieve your goals. This will motivate
you to achieve your English study goals.
Keep a question
notebook. When you meet your English teacher or English
friend you might not think of any questions. But you
probably think of many questions every day at different
times. Keep a notebook and when you meet your native
English friend, you can ask them everything!
Is there an English
movie that you love? If so, you should watch it MANY
times. I know a woman who improved her English a lot
because she watched the movie 'Titanic' 8 times. She
learned many useful expressions. She also improved her
pronounciation.
Describe something.
This activity will help you learn new vocabulary and
practice your English skills. You could describe a fridge-what
does it look like? What does it do? Or you could describe
an activity. For example, describe what happens in the
sport called 'baseball'.
Read out loud!
When you read something in English, don't just read
it silently. Use your voice. This way, you improve your
learning. You will use reading, speaking and hearing
to remember. Also, it is good speaking practice. It
will give you more confidence for speaking English.
Make conversation
with a native English speaker. If you're not too confident,
ask an easy question (for example, directions). If you
want a bigger challenge, invite a native English speaker
for cocktails or coffee!
Keep an English
diary or journal. You can write about anything you like.
It's a great way to expand your vocabulary and improve
your ability to communicate.
Learn an English
song. You'll remember English best if you enjoy studying
it, so pick a song you love!
Write new vocabulary
in a place where you will notice it. I sometimes write
new vocabulary very large on A4 paper and stick it on
my walls. Post-it notes on your desk also works!
Turn on an English
tv program or the English radio station. Even if you
are not listening carefully, you will absorb some English
if you do this every day.
When you are studying
English, you should take breaks. You should take a break
every 20 minutes. You can learn more and remember better
if you take breaks. It's true!
Make English a regular
part of your life. Write your shopping list or daily
schedule in English.
Pick a time every
day that you will think in English. Even a short time
is ok. You can think in English in the shower or when
you walk to the train station, for example.
Read English
websites! You can improve your grammar and vocabulary
by reading English.
